Biography: I was born in New York City in 1950 and was a resident of Western Massachusetts from 1970 - 2014. I began painting at the age of 15 after viewing Vincent Van Gogh's ethereal "Starry Night". In 1998, after decades as a photographer with several professional credits, I came back to painting, to my utter surprise. I began this current body of work and exhibited at galleries and art festivals from Maine to Pennsylvania including solo shows in New York City, Boston and Taos, New Mexico. From 2006 - 2009, I was represented by the Art Divas Gallery in Taos. Although this fine showcase fell victim to the recession, I was inspired enough by the beauty and culture of northern New Mexico to move here in 2014. I am now represented by "The Ranch at Taos" gallery in Taos, NM for original paintings and "Fine Art New Mexico" in Arroyo Seco, NM for excellent Giclée canvas and paper prints. My work has graced the CD covers of famed Native flutist John Huling and is also in the collections of New Mexico Arts "Art in Public Places" main office; Jack Hopkins, former New Mexico Commissioner of Indian Affairs and grandson of famed Taos Pueblo artist, Pop Chalee and that of 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Graciela Raga. As well as winning "Best in Show at the 2019 Taos Fall Arts Festival, I am one of two featured artists for the 2024 New Mexico Magazine Artist Calendar.
Statement: Simply speaking, I see images that inspire me and demand to be set to canvas. Living in northern New Mexico, this can happen by merely gazing out the window or taking the dog for a walk down my road. Having spent previous decades as a semi-professional photographer, I have an deep understanding of color, composition and visual impact. I begin a painting with a basic inspirational idea and follow both intuition and the craft of making an image that makes the viewer feel that they are standing in front of an actual landscape. Painting allows me to capture the beauty and magical qualities of the New Mexican landscape, the nuances and complexities of which I have learned not to take for granted.
